Tragic News on UPS Incident: Death Toll Increases to 13

The number of victims due to the transport jet that ignited and plummeted has now reached 13, as confirmed by recent announcements.

City Leader's Statement

Traveling to the Teamsters’ memorial service, I was informed of a 13th person that died as a result of the plane accident,” expressed the municipal leader in a online message. “My thoughts is with the families, companions and colleagues of all who were killed in this week’s disaster. We will overcome this together.”

Deceased Named

An announcement from the carrier listed the officers aboard the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 as Captain Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and International Relief Officer Dana Diamond.

“Our thoughts are extended to all employee who has been touched and everyone in our Louisville area – helping you and making sure you receive the attention and resources you need is our priority,” the company’s message expressed.

Investigation Details

Federal investigators announced that the freight aircraft’s left wing ignited and an engine detached just after takeoff from the airfield, causing the jet to fall and explode into a fireball.

The safety agency stated it is probing the plane’s maintenance history, that was in the state for fixes a period prior to the incident.

Aircraft data showed the aircraft was on the runway in that location from the start of last month to mid-October.

“We are knowledgeable that this jet was present in that city,” remarked an investigator on the following day, not giving a specific period. “We will review each aspect of service that was completed, including the Texas period, right up to the day of the journey.”

Retrieval of Critical Components

The cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder were recovered, and the power plant was found on the runway.

The recorders – referred to as flight recorders – were built to survive accident forces and severe temperatures from infernos, and they looked to be in one piece when found among the crash debris. Authorities will examining data from the recorders.

Aircraft’s concluding flight details indicated an altitude of 475 ft and a speed of 210 mph prior to the impact.

Maintenance Record

According to aviation authority files dated 18 September, a crack on a structural piece inside the fuel container needed fixes.

Headquartered in Singapore ST Engineering, which indicated it offers structural repairs for the company’s aircraft and runs a maintenance center in that city, refused to speak, but expressed it would cooperate fully when officials approached it.

Services Continue

In the meantime, the hub services resumed Wednesday night with its Next Day Air also known as night sort operation, representative Jim Mayer said. The three runways at the aviation hub were also open again.

The sorting center in the city is the firm’s biggest. The center engages over twenty thousand workers in the locality, handles numerous flights each day and processes over a huge volume of packages per hour.

Local Reaction

A gathering was held on the late afternoon of 6 November by the area worker’s group, which represents staff at the airfield, the company’s largest air cargo hub.

The union chapter, which supports staff, began the gathering with a period of reflection at 5.14pm, the approximate time of the incident two days earlier.

“This tragedy was so unexpected, so unexpected,” the leader spoke to the group of attendees. “No one had a moment to bid farewell to any of those who we have mourned.”
